US Social Media Personality Penalized After Large-Scale Electric Bike Gathering on Sydney Harbour Bridge

New South Wales police have levied a penalty against an American social media personality and handed out two driving violation citations for alleged negligent driving following a large group of electric bicycle users gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on Tuesday.

The Incident: A Prohibited Ride

A gathering of approximately 40 people operating e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and rode through the downtown area and a nearby district.

"There was a risk of people to be injured and killed," remarked NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on the following day.

Police said they did not immediately pursue the riders out of safety concerns but rather found the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the city gardens, where they dispersed.

Fines Imposed for Influencer

Later in the week, police announced they had issued the American online personality who goes by Sur Ronster, 26, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (not involving death or prior injury), with a fine of over five hundred dollars and penalty points per notice, connected to the bridge incident. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing.

The influencer is said to have more than 3.4 million followers on one platform and more than 1.2 million on the social media app.

Influencer's Comments

The online figure spoke with a local publication this week after the incident spread rapidly on digital platforms, stating he was sorry for giving "bike life" a negative image.

"I accept the blame. That was one of the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to come here respecting the laws and norms of Sydney. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a ride-out, it was just to say hi under the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we turn around, essentially, before entering the bridge. I chose at the time to go back."

Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules

The spate of e-bikes on roads nationwide has sparked increasing demands for regulation. The federal health minister, the minister, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes since the invention of the penny-farthing [but] the harm that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," the minister stated. "We’ve got to ensure we stop these things coming into the country [and] officers are given the powers to crack down, to confiscate them, to destroy them, to destroy them."

NSW reported over two hundred injuries related to electric bikes in the previous year. However, in the first seven months of the following year, that figure surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
