Pacific Bluefin Tuna Commands Record Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A bulky bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the year.
The successful offer for the 243kg fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates locations domestically and abroad.
"The first tuna heralds good luck," stated the entrepreneur, a regular participant at the yearly first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the winner told the press that he was "taken aback at the amount," adding, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This new acquisition tops his previous notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with exceptionally high prices. Last year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its locations throughout the country.
The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was promptly sliced up for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," shared one happy diner.
