Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the team's 10-match winless beginning to the top-flight campaign.
And both candidates - both of who have previous associations to the club - are among the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would pose a possible obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton manager - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club directors as they start the search of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means the club would not need to pay any compensation.
