At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Security Action on Gangs
A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.
Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. In excess of 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Violent conflicts erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials stated.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Raid Aftermath
The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the headquarters of a major illegal networks.
Government representatives stated a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Resident Accounts
Residents have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed across the area.
Organized Crime Spread
The criminal network have been expanding their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.
Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the mission, in addition to dozens of firearms.
Operation Background
The combined action by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.
